Congratulations and Best Wishes to Keith George

Congratulations and Best Wishes to Keith George

Posted on 04 November 2014 by admin

Congratulations and Best Wishes to Keith George, Ron Tonkin Honda Parts Manager, who retired on October 31st after 28 years of service to our company.  Brad Tonkin hired Keith personally when he was the G.M. of the Honda store. Keith was a quiet leader, who was instrumental in the success of the dealership’s Fixed Operations as well as the sale of Honda Parts through Tonkin Parts Center. Keith was well respected not only at the dealership, but through the entire Tonkin organization and American Honda. Keith is pictured here with his wife, Lynn, and current Honda General Manager, Brent Behboodi. We wish Keith well in his new chapter.

Digital Managing Editor- Portland Business Journal

The home of the Hillsboro Hops will be called Ron Tonkin Field, in memory of the Tonkin family’s patriarch. The Tonkins have operated dealerships in the Portland area for decades.

Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey made the announcement at a press conference today at the park, which has hosted the Hops Single-A team since the beginning of the 2013 season.

The deal is worth $1.5 million over 10 years.

“We’re very proud of our ballpark and excited to have the Tonkin family become part of our family,” said Hillsboro Mayor Jerry Willey.

Tonkin’s sons Brad and Ed said baseball has been a critical part of their family.

“My family’s love of baseball was influenced by our dad,” said Ed Tonkin. “He loved baseball and often spoke of growing up watching baseball as a kid on Vaughan Street. The thought of losing the Portland Beavers and losing baseball in Portland in the early 80’s troubled him so much he got a group together to buy the Beavers to keep baseball in our city.

“Naming this field in his honor is really a tribute to him and to all of the great times our family shared at the ballpark. My hope is that generations of area families can continue to keep catching fly balls, eating too many hot dogs and making wonderful family memories like we did.”

Dec. 4 (Bloomberg) — Ed Tonkin, Portland, Oregon-based former chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association, talks about the outlook for the U.S. auto industry. Honda Motor Co.’s record November U.S. sales paced the best month for industrywide deliveries in almost five years as buyers returned to showrooms that were disrupted by Hurricane Sandy a month earlier. Lovestory: A Ducati Wedding

On John and Jessica’s wedding day, his new bride surprised him with something most men can only dream of getting as a wedding present… a new Ducati motorcycle. While most guys feel a sense of pride, that they’re the luckiest man on earth the day they finally decide to get hitched… John had a better reason than most for feeling that way.

It was a beautiful evening ceremony in early Oregon summer- taking place at McMenamin’s Edgefield set just outside of Portland by about 30 minutes. Specific plans were all in place and confirmed… masterminded and executed by his lovely bride-to-be.

With the economy improving slowly, many metro-area auto dealerships are turning to LRS Architects for facility remodels; in fact, the firm is presently designing 11. One is a $5.6 million project for the Ron Tonkin Toyota and Mazda building in Southeast Portland.

Danny Drake, project manager at LRS, said the building presents a unique set of challenges because it will accommodate more than one car manufacturer.

“The challenge is working with the owners and balancing the way they work their businesses with the manufacturers and what they want to see with their brand,” he said. “Mazda is a little more open and edgy, while Toyota wants a more relaxed experience.”

For the “edgy” aesthetic, Drake said the firm gave the Mazda half of the 66,000-square-foot facility bright colors and more metal on finishes. He said the Toyota half will have more traditional finishes and a sweeping portal wall to invite and direct customers into the sale or service areas.

Both franchises will be reconfigured to provide an open interior that connects the sales and services area. All the finishes in the building – including the accent ceilings, metal panels and the floor tile – will be replaced.

“The economy is picking up and there are better demands for certain models, so the owners want to provide the customers with a better experience,” Drake said.

Outside of the building, the existing canopy will be replaced, a new portal entry to the Toyota side will be installed and a two-story jewel box display for Mazda’s side will be added. To meet city design requirements, the streetscape area in front of the building is designed to be more pedestrian and biker friendly, with wider sidewalks and more trees. Stormwater infiltration planters will be used throughout the property to lessen the impact on the city’s systems, and the floors of the showrooms will be made of 95 percent recyclable material.

The project is in phase one of construction and is expected to finish late this year.
